Ayurveda and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is considered as Sandhigatha Vatha in Ayurveda.

Ayurveda says that the vitiated Vatha (Vata is the vital life force responsible for all the movements of the body) gets seated in the joints and will produce the following symptoms. The affected joint will be like a leather bag filled with gas to touch, oedema will be present; the movements of the affected joints will affect and will be painful, etc.

The regular or excess use of food that are cold, dry and depleting the dhatus, (Dhatus are the structural units of the body. The seven dhatus are lymph, blood, flesh, fat, bone, bone marrow and the reproductive tissues.) will cause the vitiation of Vatha. All humans are having limited capacity to bare the differences which is caused to the changes in the external and internal environment. When this capacity goes to beyond its limits it needs correction through the therapeutic treatments.
The body, which is having pain or stiffness or defacement, can be made active by the oliation and fomentation. This will make the body flexible and will be without pain. Dry stick or a twig of a plant if oiled and sudated properly will be flexible and we can make it even into a circle without breaking it. Like this the human body also will become flexible and without diseases if proper oliation and sudation is done. Ayurvedic treatments like Elakkizhi, Pizhichil, etc are advised along with internal ayurvedic herbal medications. The merits of Kerala’s oil therapies are – just as the axle of a wheel is made stronge and durable by applying grease around it, the human body becomes stronge and lubricated by the application of oils.
