Tips for Hair Care

  1. Eat plenty of protein containing foods, fresh fruits and vegetables. Cut down on fried foods, starches and sugary foods.
  2. Wash hair daily to remove the dirt and excess oil on the head.
  3. Use soft nylon brush or comb. Do not use elastic bands.
  4. Do not brush hair when it is wet but use a smooth edged, wide toothed comb.
  5. Increase blood circulation and the blood supply to hair roots with massaging.
  6. Protect your hair from the sun by covering your head with a scarf or a shunni.
  7. If you go swimming, always rinse salt water or chlorine out of your hair straight away. Then shampoo and condition.
  8. Henna treatments restore the shine dot dull hair.
  9. Avoid back brushing and combing.

This and that of Brushing and Combing

  1. Always brush hair when it is dry. Brushing wet hair causes the ends to split.
  2. To brush hand your head down and brush away from the headfirst.
  3. While brushing tilt your head forward. This increases the blood supply to the head and stimulates the hair.
  4. Fine hairs need a softer brush, which does not scratch the head.
  5. Very thick long hairs need a bigger brush with stiffer bristles.
  6. Short or curly hair needs a narrow brush with a longish rectangular head and bristles widely spaced in groups.
  7. Never use a sharp teethed brush. They tear the hair apart.
  8. Use a comb in which the teeth are widely spaced for thick hair and for combing wet hair.

Preventive and curative measures of hair problems in general

  1. Always use a natural shampoo or soap to clean the hair. As most soaps and shampoos have chemicals, they might be the cause of your problems. Usually the chemicals have a heating effect, and increase Pitha locally. Amla (emblica officinalis), shikakai, hibiscus leaves etc. are very commonly used in India for washing the hair.
  2. Oiling and massaging the scalp is very beneficial for stopping the hair loss. Use medicated oils at least three times in a week. Ayurvedic oils according to your health and constitution are very useful. Put oil on the scalp and massage gently in the roots of the hair.
  3. The person should have a regular bowel movement every day. In case of constipation, a mild laxative can be taken.
  4. The diet should contain more green leafy vegetables, salads, milk, fruits and sprouts. Take more proteins, milk, buttermilk, yeast, wheat gram, soybean and vitamin A.
  5. Regular physical exercise is very beneficial as it helps in balancing the aggravated doshas.
  6. Daily application of coconut oil along with juice of green coriander leaves on the head is also good.
  7. Washing the hair with a paste of cooked urad dal (black beans) and fenugreek (methi) 2 – 3 times a week is also good.
  8. One tablespoon lemon juice + 2 tablespoon of coconut oil – for head massage in dandruff.
  9. Put some hibiscus flowers in castor oil and then place it in sunlight. This is applied on hair and removes premature greying and dandruff.
  10. Natural neem oil if used for Nasya (nasal drops) relieves premature greying. Then he must use milk also.
  11. Sulphate of iron i.e. Kasisa (FeSo4 7H2O) and tender karanja leaves pastes with expressed juice of Kapittha should be applied to the spot where the growth of hair (Lomoltpatti) is desired i.e. regeneration. (Sushrutha Chikitsa)
  12. Hasthi dantha mashi (burnt ash of ivory) and Rasanjan when mixed with goat milk and applied on the scalp, effects regeneration of hair.
  13. One part of shankha powder and two parts of Harital powder mixed with Shukti and applied on hair root is best for removal of unwanted hair on the body.
  14. Rubbing lemon juice on the head is effective for dandruff.
  15. A massage of the head with brahmi oil cures dandruff.
  16. Mixture of the powder of black pepper, onion and salt is rubbed on the bald patches to check the infection of ringworms.
  17. Seeds of jequirity (Abrus precatorius) are applied to the exposed skin on the head for the cure of baldness.
  18. A paste of black pepper is briskly rubbed on the head to encourage new-growth.
  19. A paste of bitter almonds (amygdala amara) applied on the head is a very good remedy for the head-lice.
  20. The juice extracted from emetic nut (randia dumetorum) is a good remedy for head-lice.
  21. For conditioning the hair and to make it stable it is good to wash it in ½ cup of beer + 1 cup water.
